About me

My name is Amy, I am a wife and mother of 3 beautiful children. My middle child, JB, was diagnosed with autism at age 2.5. Not only is autism a puzzle and no one seems to have concrete answers, the health care program for autism in Toronto, Ontario is ridiculous. If early intervention is key, then why is the waitlist so horrendous?

I wasn’t able to find a roadmap to all the programs and funding available to us so I created this site to help families like myself. If you don’t know what is out there how can you place yourself on waitlists? It was sad to discover I missed deadline to services/programs/funding by a day or a week and have to wait for the next round which is sometimes a year. No matter how you stumbled across my site, I hope you are able to take advantage of the information I’m sharing. If you have information that I missed, please do let me know so the next family benefit. Most of the information are Canadian related but you will find something applicable that might be helpful for your child.

Read my blog to get a glimpse of our lives one day at a time.

Spoke to an autism sibling and it got me good

My hubby’s cousin has a daughter who is autistic as well and I got a chance to speak with the older sister about it. We rarely see them as they live far away and I haven’t seen her for at least 2-3 years. I made sure I spoke to her before they left. She is now in grade 9 and her sister is 2 ...

Autism sibling one on one time

Before Jay was born a friend told me about her routine with her girls and how she gives them each alone time. Her older one was having jealousy issues with her second child and giving her one to one mommy time helped. I loved the idea so much I implemented it when Jay was born. We do mostly small ...

New high pitch scream

Eventful dinner on Friday as we went out to eat. The husband ran late which got me anxious as Jay and his food is a MUST. He just simply don’t understand that we will feed him soon. I prepared for it slightly with a bigger snack during snack time and offering a smaller snack after I picked up the ...

He poo in the toilet, he did it, he did it

Today at behaviour therapy he had a bm in the toilet. This is his second, with the first being last week. It could be that we just caught him at the right moment but regardless it is a good win as I celebrated like it was my birthday and his therapist did the exact same. The new occupational ...

Off to a not so good week

Baby girl had diarrhea on Monday so I kept her home. It wasn’t too bad taking her to drop off and pickup as Jay wasn’t fussy thankfully. However I kept baby girl out as I ran errands all day and she only had a short nap at 9:30 so by 3 she was ready for another nap. Only issue was this is also ...

Happy Birthday my beautiful 4 year old

J where do mommy even start? You are such a beautiful soul and when you smile you light up my whole world. There is something about your smile that just makes everything better. I want to wish you a very happy birthday and want to let you know words cannot express my love for you. Mommy is so sorry ...

If you got a runner, always take extra precaution

The other day as I was walking home from their school I had Jay on my left side near the street and baby girl on my right side. I actually thought of having Jay on the other side but decided it was safer for baby girl should a car run up the curb. You should always have your little one further from ...

2019 One to One Summer Support Worker Reimbursement Fund

This fund is available 2 times a year and there is a random selection for all those who apply within the time period. This is my 4th time applying and we were not selected the first three rounds. Hopefully better luck this time. The 2019 One-to-One Summer Support Worker Reimbursement Fund is ...

Thankful my oldest child is so sweet

Lack of sleep is a norm for us and I’ve gotten used to the point where one of our child could be screaming bloody murder and the either hubby or I are too exhausted to hear. The oldest had a bad nightmare yesterday night and was screaming. I walked in and after comforting him, he told me the ...

New Sensory Behaviours

Sorry it’s been a while since I posted, been just really busy with summer programs for the kids and getting J into school for September. Sad to say, one of the funding I was really hoping on getting came back at zero. It’s heartbreaking for me because last year I found out about this ...

Sleep deprived is so common in autism family

I spoke to another parent the other day and he said his daughter woke up at 5:30am and wanted to play. I replied, my daughter did the exact same too. My son on the other hand wakes up at 2am and stays up and he replied yup his does the same sometimes too. We both chuckled as we shared our sleep ...

IPRC update: Consultant agrees to identify him as exceptional

I went into this meeting thinking what if they don’t think he needs diagnosis kindergarten and feel he is fine at regular class. As I was voicing my concerns to hubby, he says how on earth will they think he doesn’t need diagnosis kindergarten and I agreed. However, I put up my fight stance ...

I wish I can understand why you are so sad

His frustration is to the roof today. Every morning is a crying battle. If I was to guess, I think he’s tired and lazy to come down but at the same time hungry. Don’t mess with this boy’s food, he will eat you alive. Sometimes he cries and makes the little one cry and in turn makes him cry ...

To the world’s best big brother

This one is dedicated to my oldest child, you never fail to amaze me and I’m left speechless. You are truly mature beyond your age and I’m the proudest mama alive. I never expected you to take care of your siblings the way you do. Today you took your Jay to use the potty all by ...

The best PA day date ever

For those who read my letters to my oldest, you know how sweet my child is. Today was such a sweet day for me. He’s off on his PA day so we went to his parent interview early and had plans to do lunch and tobogganing. We were both so excited about it. He got to choose the food and before we left ...

My struggles to pick up all three kids after school

For the most part, we split the pickups/drop offs because it just gets too hard dealing with all three. When J is happy it is fine picking them up together and I’ve done it before. This week we had an ice storm and J’s school warned me they might close at noon. Wish they told me earlier ...

The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services announces plan to clear Ontario Autism Program waitlists

What does that even mean? Frustrating when your regional provider doesn’t seem to understand that this new program doesn’t kick in till April 2019 which means everything remains the same as is until that day. So if you happen to be on top of the waitlist and get service you can do that ...

Where to you go every 6 months?

Yup you guessed it right, the dentist. The last dentist visit was quite a shock for me as everyone in the room was sweating. J was sweating from fighting his way out, hubby was sweating trying to hold J down, I was sweating holding baby girl on one hand and fanning the other down with the other ...

Beginning in 2018, the Ministry of Education is providing new Fee Stabilization Support (FSS) funding to help offset the increases in child care fees associated with bringing staff up to the new minimum wage rate of $14 per hour effective January 1, 2018. The funding was intended to help child care ...

Everyone has a journey of their own

Today is #bellletstalkday and I would like to dedicate this to my childhood friend who lost her hubby recently. My journey led me to take life one day at a time and think my friend might be on the same page right now or possibly one hour at a time or even one minute at a time. I will not claim I ...

Bad nights seems to be 1-2 a week

When everything went downhill J was averaging 3-4 bad nights per week. It’s been a dramatic improvement over the last year. He’s down to 1-2 bad nights a week and last few weeks been just 1 rather than 2. Unpredictable and we’ve been trying sleep earlier, sleep later, nap, no nap, weighted ...

2018 Wrap Up

2018 has been difficult for us and this December marks the 1 year mark since the diagnosis. Has things gotten better? My mom always ask me oh J must be better now and sleeping better right? No, he’s the same mom. We are still struggling and quite sleep deprived. We still get the bad nights ...

Looks like its time to register for the March break fund. I know it’s not even 2019 yet but these things usually works like this where you have to sign up for in well in advance. We applied for the summer fund but was not selected. Hopefully better luck this time around. Heres the link. Good ...

Turning point? Best night ever!

I couldn’t get him to nap yesterday so it means an early night which is good because it frees up our night. Typically we fall asleep with him when he sleeps and that’s the night. Since he slept so early we took advantage of that time and caught up on paperwork. How exciting is that? ...

Sick kids is really no fun

It’s been such a long time since I made an update. A lot been going on and we’ve been just overwhelmed. Kids been sick and sick and sick again. I swear it feels like they have been sick for almost a month. JB got better and then he is sick again. The same goes for baby girl, she just ...

My heart is over the moon: he gesture bye to me

I dropped him off today and as I said my goodbyes he put his hands out and moved those little fingers like his baby sister. My jaw almost dropped to the floor, he has never waved goodbye to me. I know it may seem small and in fact his baby sister does it on demand when I ask her to but it is a big ...

Bad nights for too many nights

We’ve lost count of how many nights it’s been since a good night. This has got to be the worse string of bad nights ever. He typically up 2-6 am and some nights he is crying for the full hour before resting for a bit only to continue the crying. On the bright side he doesn’t demand to go ...

How is my 6 years old so sweet

My Sunday funday was full of love and a tad bit of tears. J was getting up from his nap so he was laying there and his big brother Mase joined him shortly after. I was full on expecting J to be annoyed that his brother is right next to him but he didn’t seem to mind at all. J started speaking ...

Congested and can’t breath means up all night

I knew it would be a bad night and as much as I tried to make it more comfortable for him he was still up all night. It didn’t help the husband turned on the diffuser for just an hour instead on continuously on. JB was probably up around 2am and stayed up all night. By 8am, he was just ...

JB is sick 🙁

Baby girl was sick a few days ago and now it has been passed on to JB. He woke up from nap today and was not having it. When he is sick, everything sucks. He is likely the most dramatic boy ever when he is sick. I get it, it is not comfortable and he just doesn’t know how to work with the ...

Switching task with your partner makes you appreciate them more

For night duties, I usually put big one and little one to bed while the hubby takes care of JB. Since JB sleeps so late, I’m usually able to spend some quality 1:1 time with him since the other two are asleep. However the hubby is typically the one to take him to bed. I do it from time to time as ...

Preschool Speech & Language Program City of Toronto

This free preschool program actually drove me nuts. To begin the waitlist to even receive service is like a 6 month wait. Once you get an assessment you then wait for the next available open “block of service”. After your “block” you have to wait 6 months for a reassessment ...

Comparing gets me nowhere

My 1 year old is growing up and she is such a smartie pie. She is learning to communicate by pointing and leading our hands to where she wants to go. It was not long ago maybe 6 months or so that JB started pointing and leading us to where he wants to go. It was the best thing ever as that kind of ...

His first spelled word: BINGO

We were at my sisters for Thanksgiving and he was singing I though Old MacDonalds but I guess it was BINGO because he spelled BINGO. I was so shocked because this was the first time I witness him spelling a full word. I didn’t know he can spell a 5 letter word. I was speechless and so proud ...

The in-laws have changed since autism diagnosis

When we had our first child the in-laws pressured their ways of parenting a lot to a point it got out of hand. Not much changed after my second or third child. I mean literally when baby girl was born the in-laws took matters to their own hands and cut JB’s hair because they thought it was ...

Registered for JK

We are thankful our home school has a diagnostic kindergarden program for JB. It will be much easier next year this time since we can do the one drop off and it is walkable. I dislike getting the kids strapped into car seats and lugging a million big items around. After some researching, I know the ...

My child is a stripper!

What do you do when you discover you little baby is a stripper? We found him buck naked yesterday night. That bugger took off his diaper and pajama and was frozen. We left his window opened for fresh air and disovered it when we checked on him at 2am. This was not a first and I’m pretty convinced ...

We did it again, not so smart

You know when you make a mistake and vow to never make it again? Well, it turns out you forget and you make the same mistakes again and again. Rule number one with JB if he is angry we learned to always try water first, followed by snacks in case he is hungry and then toys. The rule stands if we ...

Access 2 Card: Ripley’s Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium is a fun place to take the family but it can add up when you have a family of 5. We usually buy our tickets ahead of time and try to find a deal. I am part of Perkopolis so getting tickets there is a tad cheaper. You do have to register with Perkoplis and get an access code ...

Shitty discoveries

The sunshine is not after the rain after all. The after math of a shitty disaster is A series of shitty discoveries. It started off with the damn mat with colours that disguise and hides the poop. Access 2 Card: Toronto Zoo

I am part of Perkopolis and bought my tickets from them. I think it says on the site that you should purchase at least 24 hours in advance so it gives Perkopolis a chance to process the tickets and send to you. I opted for the electronic version of course as it doesn’t make sense to pay for ...

The Poopaster continues

Maybe I should start a new dictionary of new words for JB. You guessed it, the new word of the day is “Poop + Disaster = PoopAster”. Poor boy or poor us, the diarrhea continues. We thought we would outsmart him by putting on pull ups instead, but boy were we wrong. The pull ups is ...

Poop disaster

Yesterday hubby woke up to a poop disaster. Jb has diarrhea and took off his diaper when he woke up at 7am. It was a complete disaster, all over the place. Of course this was not the first poop disaster but with diarrhea…I think you get the picture. I asked if it was all over his hands and in ...

Poo smearing and taking off clothes

When JB was first diagnosed, I went to a parenting group shortly after and the first session made me feel a million times better. I got to hear other people’s struggle and it made me realized that JB isn’t that bad. Yes he has a sleeping issue but at least he has good nights. At least ...

To my 1 year old daughter

I can’t believe how fast the year flew by and you are now a one year old. I know it is not easy for you when our attention is split since you got two older brothers. JB like you, requires our full attention most of the time and there are times where you get neglected a bit. I’m sorry ...

Warnings and countdown seems to work for us

This tip works pretty well for us most of the time. I give warnings so JB is aware I will be taking a toy away or we are about to transition into another activity.  I pair it with a countdown of 5 and time it so he is just done with whatever he is doing. If it is a puzzle, I let him finish the ...

5 Things not to say to autism parent

Your child must be a genius. It doesn’t matter if he/she is or not, the mom could care less for that. Her concerns is not of his extraordinarily skills but his ordinary day to day functions. Oh I heard x and x outgrew autism, you should do this and that. That’s great a child had their ...

Random sadness breaks my heart

Today JB was extremely sad and kept crying for over an hour. He didn’t fall or hurt himself but something must be bothering him. It so sad to watch him go into these sad spells. I wish there is more I can do to offer him some comfort. I can’t help but to think could it be the new camp? ...

Geneva Centre Summer Camp

Tomorrow wraps up week one at Geneva Centre. He is only doing two weeks there so we are almost at our half way mark. Communication has been very smooth and staff seems very nice. From sad to the saddest person alive in a few seconds

Unsure why this boy was so sad today. Perhaps it’s because he slept for only 5 mins and woke up ready to pounce at the world or could it be his new camp? His camp councillor said he had a great first day and everyone loves him there because he is the youngest and so cute. However, new ...

As he grows stronger my struggle is harder

It’s bittersweet when your child grows and although I want my children to grow, I just want them to grow very slowly so I can enjoy it just a tad longer. Yesterday JB didn’t nap and I had to take him to pickup Mase. We were cutting it real close in time so I had to rush which was my ...

New norm is waking up at 3 am one to twice a week

When we first started being concern JB was waking up 1-4 times a night between the hours of 2-4 and staying up for 3-4 hours. So if he was up at 2am he will cry till 5ish 6am or if he was up at 3am he would cry till 6ish 7. We use to let him sleep in on bad nights and just do half day for daycare. ...

How are you not exhausted from sobbing like that?

I feel so exhausted when I sob for 5 minutes, how do you manage to do it for over an hour? Why are you so sad my love? What can I do for you my baby? No nap automatically equals bad night. We think he requested to use washroom today

If you haven’t been reading up on our potty training posts, we started training and he is doing amazing. The only accidents are number twos. He hasn’t done his number two business for 3 days and usually he is a daily goer and pretty predicable. Yes yes, we keep track of their (our ...

Sleeping Issues: Perspectives

The husband had to wake up at 5am this morning because JB was screaming bloody murder at 5am. Thankful the big one slept through that and the little sister didn’t take forever to go back to sleep as usual. All in all the husband was the real loser with only 4 hours of sleep. Why did I titled ...

Bad night or would you call it super early morning

JB woke up at 3am and started crying bloody hell. I guess he couldn’t fall back asleep and for was ready to start the day. Start the day he did with the husband but unfortunately he woke up baby sister and she  was ready to start the day too. Bad sleep must be contagious because she  woke up on ...

You never get use to your child crying at night

Some stuff gets easier as the days go by and you learn how to deal with it but the truth is you will never get use to your child crying at night. It deeply saddens me the number of nights per week this child of mine cries for. I wish very much I can take away whatever frustration you are ...

Potty training update, accident free today!

It’s been a while since I posted an update on potty training. It’s started off rough with many accidents but I’m super super proud to announce JB had zero accidents and 8 successes today. He clearly knows as we don’t even need to sit on toilet for long before he looks down and pees right ...

Toilet Training: Update

I have lost count of how many days this is now. The good news is he can now hold in his pee and no longer doing spit of little pee. Today for example, he held his pee in for over 5 hours. I was honestly getting worried thinking maybe this is too intense and causing him to hold it in. He had a ...

New Word: All Done

You are an autism parent when you get all emotional and proud when your non verbal child uses any kinds of word. Yesterday, he counted out loud one to eight. It happened all too quickly and it didn’t sink in till the husband was all excited and asked if I heard that. I got teary as I cheered ...

Bad Night

What a bad night, he was up crying from 2:30-7am. That has to be the longest stretch up at night. Typically, he is up for only 3 hours but today he was up 4.5 hours. I can handle tantrums but when he is crying endlessly at night it is just heartbreaking.

Toilet Training Day 1

Children are so easy to please

I took Mase out today with baby girl for some semi alone time with him and turns out he had a great time. One poutine and booster juice later, he says I filled his bucket. A litre of tears

Why must you be so upset. Only if you can use words or somehow show me what it is, that is bothering you. Or somehow show me how to comfort you. I’m heartbroken hearing you cry because maybe you are in pain or suffering. I hate nights where you endlessly bawl your eyes out. I know you must be ...

A lost duck swimming

I cannot begin to tell you how hard it is hearing your baby cry and maybe suffer but you have no idea what is bothering him or if he is possibly in any pain. Horrible night

Horrible night as he was extremely upset at something. The hardest part of autism is seeing him bawl his eyes out because it makes me so deeply sad. Something must be bothering him to a point he wants to hang his head to calm down. I read that is a coping mechanism as it takes their mind of ...
